Heartleaf Philodendron - Philodendron hederaceum
The Heartleaf Philodendron, also referred to as sweetheart plant or velvet philodendron, produces dark green, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that emerge bronze before maturing. The leaves measure 2-4 inches and grow on stems that can reach an impressive thirteen feet in length. This trailing growth creates a beautiful cascading effect, making them ideal for shelves and hanging baskets. As vining plants, they can also be trained to climb, adding to their versatility.
Heartleaf philodendrons are beloved for their easy-going nature. Like many houseplants, they can contribute to fresher indoor air and gently increase humidity through natural transpiration. Highly adaptable and resilient, they tolerate low to moderate light and average indoor conditions with ease, making them a perfect choice for beginners or anyone looking to add lush, effortless greenery to their space.
History & Significance:
Native to South America, Central America, and the Caribbeans. It was brought from the West Indies to London in 1793, then was officially classified in 1829 by botanist Heinrich Schott.
How to care for Heartleaf Philodendron:
Potting Mix: Heartleaf philodendrons require soil with great drainage and aeration to prevent root rot from occurring while maintaining consistent moisture.
Here is an easy potting mix recommendation:
2 parts potting soil
1 part perlite or pumice
1 part orchid bark or coco coir
Water, Feed, & Frequency:
Water thoroughly and discard excess water from drip tray.
Best watering method: place plant pot in a shallow container of water, allowing the soil to absorb moisture from below.
This method can encourage deeper root growth.
Repeat every 1-2 weeks or when top soil feels completely dry.
Water less frequently during cold season.
Fertilize soil once a month during spring and summer with a well balanced liquid fertilizer.
Light & Temperature:
While Heartleaf Philodendrons can thrive in low light conditions, indirect bright light will promote faster growth and bigger leaves. Avoid direct sunlight for it can scorch the plant and yellow the leaves. These plants prefer to be in temperature range of 65°F-85°F but should always be kept above 55°F.
Toxic.
Keep out of reach from children and pets.
